Tips on Choosing Aquarium Water Pumps

When it comes to choosing aquarium water pumps, you need to determine what you will be using your pump for. The categories of use include a closed system and an open or gravity return system. The closed filter systems are tanks where water is filtered through closed canisters. These typically require more power generated by aquarium water pumps and are called ‘pressure’ or ‘high head pumps.’ Closed systems also require a higher turnover rate than other systems. Typical examples of systems like this include canister filters and pump module filters.

Open systems draw water from an open source tank or reservoir and return to another destination tank. They take advantage of gravity via the siphon box to return the water to the source tank. The pump for a system like this should be matched to the overflow plumbing size. The pump should also be fitted with a valve to control the water flow and prevent flooding.
