Struggling with Anorexia, Karen Carpenter Lost Her Life

Karen Carpenter reportedly began chronically dieting late in the year of 1973, being quoted as saying in high school she was heavy and she got tired of looking fat. Karen Carpenter Anorexia took hold around age 24 and took her life at age 32. Following late treatment for this disorder in 1982 with therapy and hyperalimentaion, Karen lost her life in February of 1983. Reportedly, at her death, her body had high levels of ipecac, a vomiting inducing medication, which may have led to the electrolyte imbalance that caused heart failure. However, it is believed by the medical community that the damage that had been done to her internal organs would have shortly taken her life regardless of the medication they found in her system.
